With the increased usage of the club’s floodlit playing and training facilities throughout the winter period, by both rugby and football, it was becoming difficult to maintain the playing surfaces to the standard required.
To improve this situation the club planned to upgrade the existing floodlights on pitch 1; these had been moved from the old Stonegravels site during the relocation to Dunston in 2012 and install new floodlights on pitch 2.
The estimated cost of the project was in the order of £70,000.
Funding for the project followed the successful application to the “Landfill Communities Fund” via Viridor Credits Company Limited (Recovery of landfill tax via ENTRUST) who provided a grant of £57,886 towards the cost, the remainder of the cost being met from Club, Coffee Club and RFU/NLD facilities improvements grants.
The securing of these funds was in no small way helped by the support for the project given by Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins, Chesterfield Borough Councillors Gordon Simmons and Sarah Hollingworth, RFU Development Officers, Local Schools and Keely Brown at the Derbyshire Football Association.
