Panthers outnumbered but not outplayed!

Chesterfield Panthers Development Squad travelled away to Belper with a bare 15 and 3 of which players down on the 1st team bench.
The game started fairly evenly, despite a dubious call from the Belper touch judge, it became apparent Panthers were up against it. The 1st 10 mins Panthers lacked discipline, giving away early penalties and a few late tackles (some of which were a very close call). Due to injuries in the 1st team game, the numbers were dwindling, losing Matt Poole and Glenn Grayson in quick succession allowing Belper to find gaps, scoring under the posts and converting 7-0.
Darren York was shortly sent for a 10 minute spell on the sideline for persistent offside, during this time Panthers had to reshuffle again as Terry Titley's services were required on the other pitch! 11 vs 15 - comfort came in the form of the injured-but-persistent Sean Hadfield and this helped regain some balance but Panthers still had to concede to uncontested scrums. This played into their favour, however, allowing Paul Giller at 8 to pick and go making some good yards with great support play from flankers Isaac Tuckley and Sean Hadfield and allowed Panthers a long spell of possession.
This finally started to pay off, after a 5 minute period camped in the opposition 22, Sean Hadfield managed to crash over scoring his 1st try for the club under the posts, Giller converting 7-7.
Panthers now started to play with a bit more belief and with clever tactics from Adam 'Dodge' Rodgers on the sideline, they slowed the pace, keeping hold of the ball and exploiting gaps. After some impressive play from the newly converted forward Lewis Chapman, Alex Tustin was screaming for the ball as he knew where the gaps were. Then with some unexpected wizardry from Tustin and a deep chip over the top, the ball bounced perfectly in front of the Belper fullback for our very own Spring Bok, Kyle Huntington, to gather at height and show his pace bringing the score to 7-12 - Damien Francois Pope missing the conversion.
At the restart, Paul Giller catching a high ball, running a direct line, breaking 2 tackles and was clear through, only the fullback in his way. Credit to the full back for putting in a try saving tackle, but his head positioning resulted in him needing to leave the field due to being knocked out. Panthers were now flying high, players oozing confidence, Yorkie returning to the field 12 vs 15 - Belper were stretched.
HT - 7-12
Adam Rodd had to leave the field due to his eye being gouged - back down to 11 vs 15.
After some words of encouragement from management and the captain, Panthers took the to field prepared to hold off the Belper attacks.
Shortly after the restart, Belper made use of their 4 extra men out wide, stretching Panthers and bringing the score to 12-12.
As the game progressed, Panthers started to settle which appeared to unnerve the home side as their lack of discipline started to creep in. A late tackle on Kyle Huntington resulted in him leaving the field due to injury and Panthers having to drop another man. Trainee pre-game strapper and first aider Chris James Phillips kitted up again for the 2nd time this season allowing us to play 11 vs 15.
With a penalty just outside the opposition 22, Giller decided to kick for the posts bringing the score to 12-15.
After some calming words from Adam Rodgers, Panthers regrouped and reverted to playing a narrow forwards game, with great success with the 4 man line out. Panthers were winning everything. Wave after wave of Panthers pressure allowed Declan Wileman, to everyone's surprise, pick the ball up 2 meters out crashing over the line to score his first ever try! - Giller converting 12-22
Kyle Huntington returned to the field shortly after - 12 vs 15.
Panthers pressure continued with Alex Tustin pulling the puppet strings stretching Belper and adding to their frustration, allowing Damien to crash over - Giller converting - 12-29
After some changes to what appeared to be a 300 man squad from Belper, they piled the pressure back on. With some resilient defending, Panthers kept them out much to Belpers frustration but then Steven Hatt saw a yellow card for a high tackle on the 5 meter line - 11 vs 15.
With some impressive line speed from Alex Tustin, managing to disrupt his opposite number causing a knock on, Panthers had the ball back and were able to clear their lines. Another successful lineout - the 11 man side were back on the attack, after a rolling maul and the ref noticing a very obvious headbutt from the opposition 10, Panthers were awarded a penalty inside the opposition 22 and the offender saw a red card - 11 vs 14.
With only a minute remaining, Giller took his full 60 secs kicking for the posts, bringing the score to 12-32.
FT - 12-32
Forward of the Match - Lewis Chapman! Fantastic performance from the new lad.
Back of the Match - Damien Pope - big carries, big kicks, well deserved.
