U10s pop down to Derby for a run out...

Well everyone was ready for the second match of the season, with a Sunday drive to Derby via a little diversion.

The weather on the drive down was decidedly wet but luckily, the rain dried up turning cold and bright. When the sun did come out you could almost say it was warm-ish.

Andy warmed up the Panthers, as the parents posed for pictures (you know who you are). With the players in a circle passing the ball and every now and again popping in a second ball for an aerial catch with a penalty “press-up” if you didn’t.

Garvin and Andy split the Panthers into two teams, with several players volunteering to make up the numbers in the Derby squad to allow two full teams to play.

As there were several games going on the car park had filled, which stopped automotive fun admittedly on a small scale, but the search for a track continues.

The games quickly became very physical, and even though Derby had turned out numerous large players, the Panthers were not daunted by the size of the opposition and matched every play with muscle, skill and speed. As the game progressed an issue with high tackling started to dominate but was soon bought under control by the swift action of the two referees. William made some great runs almost the full length of the pitch and could have made even more ground if he kept away from the sidelines, which the opposition used to their advantage.

At 11 the play stopped, and the teams formed into a circle and linked arms for the one-minute silence to remember the fallen all the players and coaches showing dignity and respect.

As the day progressed the physicality of the matches started to take its toll, legs and arms started to become exhausted, the games started to slow but the players fought on, yet still showing sportsmanship. At one stage Andy had to give one of the squads one of his “special” team talks to reboot the play.

Try scores today by Felix C, Emilio, Oli, Charlie, William, Vinny, Oli P, Lewis, Kia and Archie (and possibly one or two more).

Quotes of the day from Garvin “help him”, “tower” and the best one “stay on the pitch (sigh) wrong way”.

Thoughts from the trenches:

Andy: Over all in the last game, the second half performance started to play. Although they do not have positions, you can see where they are naturally suited. Once we had some of the bigger players coming through the middle making their runs with people getting behind them for the quick ball, it was the best 15 minutes play they had. Still a work in progress, at times the support play could have been better.

Garvin: Today was absolutely brilliant, the opposition was a notch up from previous matches, a good playing team but very physical. We know we have loads of pace and matched them with the physicality and certainly scored our fair share of tries.

Thanks to Derby for a challenging and physical game and the much-needed sausage and chips for a snack afterwards.

The man of the match, has to go to Dave and his consistent and accurate refereeing under difficult conditions.

Thanks to Andy, Garvin, Dave and Ben (who arrived late after a coming back from a celebration).
