Panthers 9s finish with a bang!

Sunday 8th May 2022

The U9s signed off a fantastic season in the best possible way - a session versus the parents and presentation of awards!

An excellent turnout by kids and parents meant we had good numbers for all the games.
After a warm up of scarecrow tag the kids were ready to take on the parents. It started with relay races, ball in hand, progressing to passing, wheelbarrow and then bear crawls.

With the warm ups behind us, the kids and parents stepped up to face off in a Tag game (despite calls for a contact game!). The kids outnumbered the parents almost 2 to 1, but couldnt make use of the extra space. After almost reaching the try line the kids lost the ball and turned over to the parents. A quick break meant that Paul C scored a field length try (1-0) for the parents! The kids rallied and scored a great try through Archie Bell who managed to evade the parents! It all came down to a deciding score and it was the experience and pace of the parents that brought home the final score from Ian Y.

To finish, the kids enjoyed a game of rugby rounders - although I couldn't quite believe how mean those parents were, catching all the kids out!!

On to the presentations. It has been a successful season for the U9s, with a number of games and festivals attended. We had tag matches with Mansfield, Dronfield, Thornesians and Sheffield. We started contact training in November, getting ready for the contact matches we had with Matlock, Sheffield Tigers and Thornesians. This was followed up by great days of rugby with festivals at Ilkeston and Matlock, then we hosted a four way match at Chesterfield last weekend.

We finished the season with 19 players which was great - just remember, if anyone has a friend that fancies trying rugby please invite them down to give it a try! We welcomed 4 new players during the season - Ali, Vinnie, Isaac and Leo - all are great additions and we look forward to seeing their improvements next season!

From the coaching staff, I'd like to Thank you to all the players. It's your smiles and enthusiasm for the game that makes us keep on coming!
A big thank you to all the parents. As a parent myself, I understand the trials and tribulations of getting your child to the pitch and keeping them on it. We appreciate you bringing them down through all the seasons that we have to endure at Dunston!
Thank you to all the helpers/coaches - Jon, Paul, Scott and now Andy on the coaching side. Also to Sarah for her organisation and team management.

Lastly, I want to say thank you to my own daughter, Phe. She is the reason I'm there every week, and it's just my excuse to spend time with her! She has enjoyed the season and although she wasn't sure about tackling in games she has stuck at it and keeps coming. She's always ready with her kit on to go on a Sunday morning. She's a winner to me!

Check the training dates in Pitchero as we will have monthly "catch up" sessions with the squad. These will be fun sessions and not really rugby based - rounders, three legged races, tug-o-war, maybe even football. Also there is an opportunity to camp up on the pitches in mid July (16th) before a morning session on the 17th.

I hope you've all enjoyed and look forward to seeing you all soon - Coach Steve

Instructions

U9 & U10s
Session 9:30 – 10:30,
Food 11:00 – 11:30,
Presentations 11:00 – 12:00

Sessions beforehand obviously optional, but it’s usually an enjoyable session for all, and allows the kids to burn off a little energy before the main event.

Food will likely be by fuddle as usual, and I’m sure squads will be able to devise a cunning plan regarding who should fetch what on the day.
