Panthers take another 5 points

Chesterfield Panthers 1st XV vs Boston 1st XV

Panthers aimed to continue their recent string of form and continue their steady rise up the league table. Boston sat one place below Chesterfield and a win would put breathing space between between the two sides.

Chesterfield started the game strongly and were able to settle into their game-plan quickly and the large home support were rewarded with the try of the match inside the first 10 minutes as Panther’s exploited an overlap and Tye Rose ran 60 metres beating 4 defenders to touch under the posts. Skipper Chris Ward added the simple conversion.

This seemed to provoke Boston and they enjoyed a period of dominance, gifted to them by poor Chesterfield discipline. After pegging Panthers bag with several penalties Boston were able to pull back three points with a penalty kick.

After issues around resetting the scrum early on, the Chesterfield pack began to completely dominate the set piece disrupting Boston by pushing them off their ball several times. Scrum-half Jordan Grayson continued his recent run of form by harassing the Boston scrum-half and turning over the ball.

Chesterfield once again found themselves in good field position after Boston incurred the referee’s wrath. Jordan Grayson darted forward from a smartly taken tap penalty to touch down. Boston however, were illegally positioned from the penalty forcing the referee to award the penalty try. Ward again added the simple conversion.

Panthers continued to move the ball around the pitch enjoying the upper-hand. After working several phases through forwards Rob Davison, Chris Brailsford & Chris Winlde the ball was spun out to the backs and Adam Miles crashed over from close range to score Panthers third. Ward again continued his success from the tee adding a further two points.

Boston were to finish the half the stronger side after a Chestetfield handling error allowed the Boston centre to sneak through for the away sides first try.

Half-time: Panthers 21 Boston 10

Chesterfield looked to open their legs in the second half yet what followed was a relatively poor period of 20 minutes whereby neither side was able to put together any flowing rugby.

Boston were able to close on Panthers lead with a second try smartly taken out wide, however this was as close as the away side would come.

Adam Miles put in a couple of smart counter attacks to pull Chesterfield within close range of Boston's line and following a steal at the line-out by second row Jamie Barnett, the forwards mauled super-sub Joe Walton over the line to score in the corner and take the bonus point try. Ward missed the difficult conversion.

Panthers once again demonstrated their dominance, this time Chris Brailsford & Luke Holt making breaks through the centre allowing Rob Collins to put Nick Fenton in the corner for the home sides fifth try.

Excellent defensive work from Chesterfield pinning Boston on their own line rewarded Panthers as an outstanding tackle from Joe Walton simultaneously ripped the ball from the Boston defender and touched down for his second. Once again Ward was unsuccessful with the wide shot at goal.

Full Time: Panthers 36 Boston 15

Panthers president Pete Amos selected Chris Brailsford as man of he match citing his tireless work at the breakdown.

Skipper Chris Ward said 'we didn't play a full 80 minutes in top gear today, but to put 6 tries past a well organised mid-table side demonstrates our potential in this league. I am extremely happy as moving into third puts us well in contention for promotion.'
