Impressive individual performances not enough in battle against Belper.

Barebones Chesterfield Panthers traveled away to face Belper, with a steady warm up and some pre match preparations. Spirits were high and positive.
Chesterfield were quickly unsettled and had to make very early changes, despite having no subs on stand by, when fly half Adam Pedley had to leave the field with a hamstring injury and Belper breaking the line quickly to begin the scoreline with three successive tries 5-0, 10-0, 17-0.
The Panthers had to close the gaps in defence and began to show some promise when Welsh wizard Leon Owen managed to breakthrough with a 40m sprint followed by a clever chip, but the ball was intercepted by the home side.
After a funny turn in the breakdown, Lee Whitmore had to leave the field with a problematic ankle and Terry Titley was called over from the other game on the second pitch.
Things started to look up as the scrums began to stabilise, and at 6 metres out scrum half Jordan Grayson had good foresight to get in a cheeky try 17-5.
Belper answered back and broke down the wing, before an impressive tackle from welcome return James Kennedy stopped the runner in his tracks. Jordan Grayson went for the clearance kick which was charged down, allowing Belper to score under the sticks, half time 24-5.
Half time change seen a hardworking Tom Mee off with a shoulder complaint and another welcome return in Glenn Grayson, who had spent the first 40 minutes on the other pitch also. Fire was put into Chesterfield bellies ready for the second half and still all to play for. Unfortunately, passion only gets you so far and blind luck gets you farther, after an awful kick took a sweet bounce into Belper hands to give them more points on the board, 31-5.
Glenn Grayson demonstrated why he's been missed so much in recent weeks with an awesome 60 metre kick, run and perfectly executed tackle! A really impressive display in comparison with a professional level.
Jamie Barnett was unlucky to see the sin bin on his return, and the Panthers were reduced to 14 men, allowing Belper to find more gaps and score again 36-5.
After some unsportsmanlike jeering from the home crowd, the Panthers blood began to boil, and they answered the rallying crowd in the best way possible. Dominant pressure and a loose ball to Glenn Grayson silenced the crowd and got heads back up, 36-10.
During this high impact attack prop Lee Laughton took a knock to the chin, reducing the numbers to 13 whilst he was given a head injury assessment by busy physio Carolyne Ledger. Determined to not see the Panthers suffer due to lack of players, Lee Whitmore rebuilt his ankle with tape and went on to help hold the line, but Belper found space to score again and again 46-10.
With just a few minutes left on the clock and with great work in attack and defence, Glenn Grayson was given a yellow card for a high tackle.
Coach Mark Blair had words of encouragement for his hard grafters "I think their were some great displays of individual performances from every player today, we were unlucky in a few scenarios but we can see that we have the right ingredients here. We are rebuilding for a bright future, once these performances come together we will get the results that we're after."
Although the score lines haven't been reflecting it, the players are putting in some real shifts on the pitch. Ant Barnett put in a hell of a shift and Matt Poole showed he is capable of holding his own at first team level. James Marshall, Tom Mee and James Kennedy worked like men possessed, James earning man of the match. All players should be proud of their efforts today and look forward to finishing the season with some positives.
