The British seaside has been disappointing people for people since records began, the Chesterfield Panthers journey there was true to form.
Miserable weather conditions greeted the travelling side as they arrived in Cleethorpes to confront the league leaders, a broken boiler gave the changing rooms a true grass-roots rugby feel to the affair and the lads trotted out, icicles in tow, to play.
The first have was a war of attrition, the rain calmed but unfortunately Cleethorpes took an early lead, towards the end of the second half Glenn Grayson danced a try in (Pedders converting) and there seemed to be a glimmer of hope to Chesterfield trailing by 7 points, 14-7 at half time.
The second half saw Cleethorpes turn up the pressure and make another score, captain Leon Owen received a yellow car for high tackles and Cleethorpes used the overlaps in the backs without mercy, Panthers tried to hold on but the tide was rushing in, Owen came back on only to see young Tommy O'Brien take his place in the sin bin, as the referee saw fit to give another yellow.
Full time saw the score at 43-7 to Cleethorpes, the travelling Panthers were as salty as the sea breeze on the trip home, but never defeated in spirit.
Positives - Good lineouts considering conditions and strong scrums throughout.
Thanks to the travelling supporters!
On to the next weekend gentlemen!
