On a crisp February Sunday, Chesterfield Panthers under 12s took on Sheffield Tigers who, in previous years, had been a team that proved to be a bit of a nemesis for the Panthers. However, this time was different with Panthers noticeably having the upper hand for 95% of the match.
Panthers started positively from the offset with an early link up between Tobi, George R and Archie leading to the first try within minutes of the starting whistle. Further positive attacking play from Panthers; including Rex’s characteristic ruck winning and powerful driving play from Louis Y, Ed and Rocky, saw Panthers gain ground on the Tigers, leading to further tries from Archie and George. This dominance in the first half continued with Tigers barely gaining ground into the Panthers half and, if they did, the Panthers defence thwarted any chance of Tigers scoring by standing firm or driving a Tigers player out of play.
The second half was slightly less of a one-sided affair however Panthers continued to dominate. George R kicked to restart, but the catch of the Tigers player was thwarted by the charge of the Panthers players, notably Sam who led the drive, leading to George R connecting with Fin for a further try.
There were many promising moments, with Panthers players working well together, passing down the line in order to gain advantage over the Tigers’ defence and getting stuck in on rucks to ensure the attacking play continued. Plus, the new Panthers, Malakai, Sam and Louie all got stuck in and gave it their all!
