The Chesterfield Panthers U13s travelled to Sheffield RUFC with a large squad of 25 players, facing a Sheffield side with only 11. In a great display of sportsmanship, several Panthers players were loaned to the opposition to ensure a competitive and developmental match for all involved. The game was structured to allow a near-complete team swap at halftime, giving newer players valuable experience and allowing long-term players to try out different positions.
First Half Highlights:
Sheffield kicked off and immediately put the Panthers under pressure. Strong defensive work from Evan, Tylor, and Fin prevented an early Sheffield score just yards from the try line. Despite sustained pressure, the Panthers struck first against the run of play—Evan made a decisive break, and George R finished the move with the opening try.
Following the restart, Sheffield surged forward again, only to be stopped by a textbook tackle from Enzo H. Their persistence paid off, however, and they levelled the score shortly after.
The Panthers responded with some excellent passing between Elliott and Ollie, followed by a dominant ruck. Malakai seized the opportunity, found space, and sprinted through for try number two. Sheffield equalised again and looked poised to take the lead before halftime, but a determined defensive stand led by George R kept them out.
Second Half Highlights:
With fresh legs and new roles across the pitch, the Panthers began the second half with renewed energy. Try number three came from a powerful forward drive led by Eduard. After a well-contested ruck, Ollie passed to George R, who broke through the Sheffield defence with support from Tobi and Tylor.
The game remained evenly matched, with Panthers players loaned to Sheffield continuing to contribute strongly—Elliott and Malakai among them.
Try number four was a standout team effort. From a scrum, Ollie passed to Tobi, who powered forward, handing off two defenders before offloading to Tylor. Though tackled, Tylor was quickly supported by Rex at the ruck, allowing Ollie to recycle the ball and pass back to Tylor, who finished the move with a well-earned try.
Final Thoughts:
A competitive and spirited match that showcased the depth and versatility of the Panthers squad. The team demonstrated growing confidence in their back plays, including dummy runs and well-timed offloads. The willingness to rotate players and support the opposition highlighted the club’s commitment to development and sportsmanship.
Key takeaways include:
• Strong defensive efforts under pressure
• Back plays coming together with dummy runs and offloads
• Excellent team spirit and adaptability across positions
Areas to Develop:
